We Are the World

They said the Earth was flat and we believed
Until we realized how foolish it seemed
They said we could not be friends for our colors weren’t the same
We shook hands and smiled, and learned each others’ names
They said peace couldn’t exist in this day and age
Yet we write the treaties day by day, page by page
They said about a computer malfunction…They cried “Y2K!”
We calmly responded, “It will all be OK.”
They said so many things could never be done
We proved them wrong, one by one
They say children are starving. They cannot be saved.
Their road to the afterlife has already been paved.
They say our attempts to help have no meaning
That they will die, and our only option is grieving
They say that they completely understand
That it just didn’t quite go according to God’s plan
And while the children famine, they enjoy their feasts
So today we want you to listen at least
They say this and that, but we will prove them wrong
We Are the World, we are free and strong
We will not give in to empathy or greed
We will reach out a hand to someone in need
We will help every man, woman, boy and girl
We stand as one…We are the world
