We Are Not Alone

People like us cannot feel aloud We hold the world's pain within our own To mask the anxiety in our words, in our thoughts We talk about spring and joy Like we understand where it comes from Because we felt it once. Briefly We smile, we laugh, we live But in truth we're all liars We protect ourselves at all costs We speak to the mirror because we refuse their answers Betterment and peace cannot lie out there Why can't we just fix it The wailing sirens come for us eventually But the person that needs them the most Always backs away, deeper and deeper still Maybe if we hid and they left It will go with them But we would hate ourselves if we tried Yet life goes on And the flashing lights must be appeased Some thing needs to show proof of life They answer the door for us And stand at the window and wave So that the neighbours know we are home They absorb what we cannot The happiness and tenderness Banalities of life that we struggle to ingest You see who you are allowed to Who we want you to Who you need to see We've been burned trying stoke our own fire So we hold back and just watch As the glow begins to fade We refuse to allow a single tear to leave our eyes Because we know it will not stop at one It will not stop at all
