Notes About The Poem

We Are Family

Somehow, we found enough to say Between sips of coffee And bites of pecan or apple pie Possibly between commercials As we waited for Andy Griffith to continue Enough to say “Why did they split up?” “Was he cheating on her?” “No, she was cheating on him.” And, there was the sin Enough to say “Are you going to the grocery store tomorrow?” “Do you buy Laura Lynn brands?” “No, I don’t like the store brands.” And, there was the story Enough to say “I wish you would come over for dinner.” “When do you want me over?” “Tomorrow night or next Friday, maybe.” And, there was the date Somehow, we always found enough to say Between gossiping and memories There was laughter, love and light Beckoning like stars in the night, shining Through the happiness that was ours As we spent our time together A people, partaking of the prayers Taught to us through a lifetime Of giving, living, and giving some more Hope, faith and love The answers to every doubt The hue of courage in the shadows That claimed our names As a family
