Notes About The Poem

This Is A True Story, Our Father Didn't Want Us To Choke On The Watermelon Seeds. "Through The Darkness, I Have A Few Good Memories."

Vickie Thayer

Watermelon Seeds

When I Was A Small Fry,
My Father Would Often Try,
To Tell Us Stories All About Life,

One In Particular,
Sticks Out In My Mind,
The Story Of Watermelons And Their Rind,

We Were Told To Never Swallow The Seeds,
That The Watermelons Sweetness,
Is All We Should Eat,

He Informed Us,
That Eating Watermelon Seeds,
Grew Babies,

Well Now,
My Child Mind,
Being The Wondering Kind,

Wondered If A Seed My Stomach Should Find,
Instead Of Watermelon,
The Orange Pumpkin Kind,

Would I Have A Jack-O-Lantern Baby?,
Just In Time For Halloween?,
This Certainly Seemed Logical To Me,

Now All Of This Rhetoric Sure Did Stink,
Our Watermelon And Pumpkin Days,
We Had To Rethink,

To Avoid Conception We Never Swallowed Their Seeds,
Instead We Planted Them And Let Them Be,
In Rich Soil Beneath Sweet Apple Trees,

Our Garden Grew With Plenty To Eat,
Prompted By Stories Of Deceit,
My Father Was Held Accountable,
For Telling Stories That Tasted So Sweet.

This is so sweet Vickie and cleverly written.I remember as a child being told not to eat apple pips for the same reason. The problem when we’re little is we believe everything grown-ups tell us.I feel there’s also a moral here as well.

Wow, well done. Heard the same stories, keep writing, you'll find both joy and tears in that release. God bless.

Now this is deep.. I wonder if you used the seeds as a metaphor.. Or is it just simple words... I like the title and your creative mind... I'm happy your did it your way and were not mislead, and your garden grew with plenty to eat and enjoy... An excellent write Vickie..

Thanks Silent One. A True Story, Held Captive In My Memories, One Of Very Few That Were Good. I Think Coming Out Of Abuse As A Child, Or Any Abuse For That Matter, Makes Us See And Feel In Ways Others Can Not Feel. We Need To Express With Words, Painting, Stories And Poetry. The Ink Beats With My Heart. Vickie
