Water Was Never My Enemy

Your love makes me feel like a cactus in a pond —
out of place, unsure I belong.
Your love makes me feel you deserve so much more
than what I have to give.

Why are you being nice to me?
asks the cactus, to the pond —
I only know how to survive,
not how to live.

I'm not asking you to bloom,
let me show you —
stay a while, and find out
water was never your enemy.

You are loving me again,
says the cactus —
and this time, I let it.

A tender, original metaphor for learning to trust love again. The cactus’s final choice—“this time, I let it”—is beautifully quiet and deeply moving.
