Watching the Great Apes

When we were young
We were boys in abandon playing
And I played like that
Going around and 'round
For a better hold,
A better hug,
A better embrace,
A better look at father's face
But he was not there
Big hairy and strong in arms
Love overflowing there
In sweet frolic of play
A rub of head
A little grooming, a flash
Of speed and suppressed alarm
All that would have been mine
And yours too
Had our father stayed to hear
Us grunt and split with gladness
The evening air.

Excellent imagery of little boys growing up without their fathers. Well done!
