Watching the Feeder

The bird (a dove?) was pecking ‘round The seeds that scattered on the ground. A chipmunk timidly approached; The bird disliked his turf encroached. So twice I saw him lift his wings (I rarely get to see such things) To scare the chipmunk (just a guess); The rodent, though, felt no distress. A cardinal came by to feed And little birds of unknown breed. The dove calmed down, the chipmunk stayed While from my perch, I never strayed.

I wish I had a birdfeeder but the rules forbade it, though a few residents have hung suet balls encrusted with seeds on some of the trees that hug the building in front of their apartment windows. Unfortunately I live on the third floor and no trees reach that high. / Maurice

The bird raises his wings; the chipmunk yawns. Great scene, ilene! :) gw

There’s nothing as relaxing as having a bird feeder or two. I only wish we had chipmunks too. Loved the poem. John
