Waiting

so whose quick hand strokes your thigh
holds your shoulder so you know what is coming
after dark
what he expects in the bed
where your secret life together lives
the set of his jaw
the throbbing vein in his head now and then as he
releases
himself
the tone of his voice now as he speaks about dinner
what he is thinking is about later
when children are gone and you are alone
what he will want
what you will do
the backstory fills the day
and we dance around it
waiting
