Waiting

The pink balloon bobs gently
in the breeze above his head.

The girl before him is crying,
screaming.
Tears spilling
onto the front of her pink dress
leaving dark wet patches.

He stares
captivated,
fascinated

The woman strikes him across the face.

He glares.

She walks quickly away
dragging the girl
in the pink dress
roughly along by the hand.

An empty swing
moves back and forth lazily
as autumn leaves
scurry in eddies
around the vacant playground.

He stands, watching, waiting.

A dog barks at him fiercely
baring its teeth
straining at its leash.

He watches the long shadows
follow the man and the dog
into the pink evening sunset.

This is the truth of some people, weirdly enough.

hmmm, this one is so interesting. Did the woman slap him for thinking he was a pedophile? I feel like he was just a man watching things around him!!

I was going deliberately for ambiguity but read again "a father gatecrashing his daughter's birthday party hosted by his ex-wife and her new boyfriend.' Perhaps?
