Voluntary Negro

VOLUNTARY *****

if
i didn’t know
who I was,
would I be your voluntary *****?

shhh
we don’t say
that word anymore
*****
who gave that word power?
Ni**er!
is that better?
worse?
does it make you squirm?
feel uncomfortable?

it doesn’t bother me
until
it’s uttered from the lips
of those who use it
to cut down to the bone

i am not your voluntary *****
i do not believe
i am less than anyone

some would have you believe
their evolution
eclipsed ours long ago
that a slave mentality
is all we should hold
that we will never be more
i beg to differ

I can appreciate your words. I wish this world were different but it is not. Stay strong in your rites...I wish I had the strength you appear to have. great words in your verse.
