Voices Over Thorns
Poet's Note:
Inspired by Glenn Hughes' song "Voice in my Head" from the album _Chosen_.
This poem explores the dialogue between the inner critic and the inner guide while walking the difficult path.
Voices Over Thorns
I walk the path of thorns with bare feet,
each step planting roses in my blood.
My heart is a cracked bell, ringing in the middle of my chest.
VOICE 1 - THE CRITIC
Look at you. A ghost in your own life.
With hardship, your golden wings break and turn to ash.
Grief is the forbidden apple. Don’t eat it if you want to live.
A skeleton laugh rattles from my ribs:
Choose the smooth road. Be safe. Be nothing.
You are a coward pretending pain is purpose.
I press my palms to the wound.
The earth drinks me and calls it baptism.
VOICE 2 - THE GUIDE
Child, the thorns are not a punishment.
They are the blacksmith’s fire for your soul.
With hardship you become an unbreakable gemstone.
Like the eagle who flies with eyes above the storm clouds.
I am your shadow, and I do not lie.
The right path always costs. That is how you know it’s real.
Let sorrow polish you until your heart shines pure.
I lift my head.
When you choose the throne path,
pain becomes the reward
and strength becomes the crown I was born to wear.
