Wisdom is definitely a by product of age but being old does not guarantee one to be wise. Hence the saying, "You old fool" lol

Your interpretation is close, Daniel. The poem comes from an old curmudgeon who considers that he, at least, is not quite as ignorant and stupid as he was when younger.
