Notes About The Poem

Veterans Day

Veterans Day

We were happy
With the war being over.
Our eyes swelled with tears
When the guns ceased fire.

Those long years
Of suffering ended,
Of shattered lives
And always wondering.

And on that day,
Soldiers were marching,
Rifles shouldered, arms swinging,
While people hugged and kissed.

My father had come home,
And my mother said,
“Let us pray
For those who didn’t.”

“Veterans Day” is a U.S. federal holiday (formerly known as “Armistice Day”) observed on November 11, honoring military veterans.

My heart is sad. I agree with her. I can almost hear her say, let us not do this ever again... "peace"... Really great picture. Ann
