Vanity
And all immortality belongs with the Almighty;
And all of eternity belongs to the Almighty;
And all the affairs of man
And man himself
Are but like dewdrops at sunrise.
And every passing day,
And every passing night,
Mortality compulsorily and subtly crosses through
The vast emptiness to meet us for our mulct.
And he comes while we are awake.
And he comes while we are asleep.
And he comes like a shadow in the dark.
Unnoticed.
Every day and every night.
And soon it will be sunset
And man and all his endeavours
Will become but subtle shadows of themselves
Steadily flickering out.
