Used To - But Not Now

USED  TO  -  BUT NOT NOW

I was younger then,  and
When friends or lovers left me 
I used to  question myself, 
Punish myself for being not worthy of them - 
That’s why they left me,  I said.
Now I know that they were not worthy of me.
I didn’t know it  -  and  I questioned.
They didn’t know it - and they didn’t question.
That’s why we were incompatible: 
Some  people think, other do  not.
That’s why they had to leave.

Carolyn Devonshire December 17, 2010 at 11:28 AM People leave our lives for all sorts of reasons, but children do seem to take these actions personally. As we get older, we realize what you express in your poem is true. Reminds me of the way children are victimized by divorce; they feel they did something wrong when in fact it was incompatibility between the parents. A short poem they conveys your message very powerfully and from the perspective of a bewildered child. Love, Carolyn
