Up Until

Up until I found
That love card..
not meant for me...
That was the moment...
I began to see...
16 years of marriage,
and I never got a card,
Now one I stumbled upon
Hidden below some clothes
that you recently had doned
This was but the beginning
of my shocking discovery,
One that I'd prayed,
Never would I see...

Then he called,
collect from Attica jail,
I picked it up,
My luck never to fail,

My heart's unravelling,
my life"s mirage,
Now I truly see...

I made a big mistake
16 years before,
And married her,
Despite her rep as a whore

You can't change a leopard's spot
And if you cried and tried,
Success you will ultimately not,
'Cause people ain't no angels,
Certainly you deserve,
A shred of self-respect...
So leaving home was natural
What more can one expect?

Your young son's tears
and pleading so heartbreaking
Your heart shattered so much I say
This was the very darkest
That my heart has had to pay.
