Until I Break

He called my name
I turned around
He sniffed me out like a hungry bloodhound

I try to hide
I back away
But still he finds me there anyway

He caresses my arm
I count to three
My mind drifts off to somewhere I’m free

He says “take off your clothes”
My body breaks a silent oath
A lump in the back of my throat
Fear or sadness? Maybe it’s both

Age 8 and facing a world of darkness
His dark eyes full of intense sharpness
I felt like a carcass of my old self
Left in the dark like a dusty old shelf

He was my stepdad, it left me confused
My mom left me neglected, he left me abused
I wanted a new life but life just refused
So I carry the hurt but it won’t be excused

Cuz I’m breaking this generational curse
And just to be real, it could’ve been worse
I got my little girl, he’s in the back of a hearse
Dead and forgotten like a dirty old purse

If life taught me anything, it’s how to be strong
It gracefully taught me how to right any wrongs
It taught me to be the one to break all the chains
I’m proud of the person I’ve built through the pain
