Notes About The Poem

Unrequited

Love is a word, too easily used
A mental state that's oft confused
No warning shot does Cupid let fly
Before his arrow strikes the bullseye.

It's thought Love spreads as a wildfire,
 heated flames of uncontrolled desire.
It left behind a heart that was torched,
Wounded as if it had been scorched.

For admitted poems, there is no ill will
 though uncomfortable as winter's chill
for contentment I've found on my own
No paramour do I seek nor do I condone

No longer a reason for a swain to linger.
Nor lyrics sung by a balcony singer
  There's nothing I want that I don't have
Nor in need of ointment or healing salve

From a precipice no one should dare leap,
Fall from a steed, nor lose a night of sleep
Nor tumble further down into an abyss
while waiting for that unwanted kiss

Realize when it's time to just walk away,
Hold emotions you continue to display
No words of unrequited love written
will change a heart that is not smitten.

As bitter as these simple lines may sound,
It's an honest attempt to be honor bound
to reflect on love's hope, thus conceived
but not returned, so don't be deceived.

Move on to other flowers without regret
One who'll receive the honeybee and yet
accept the offer of love and have it returned
by one for which your destiny has yearned

My sweet Linzzzieez i absolutely agree with everything that you've said here; I am of strong opinion that love is indeed a word that is used so carelessly often.. many are unaware of the true depths that it holds, the many orchards that it takes to finally bloom beyond time, something worthy of our uniqueness and soul.. it is something so divine and sacred.. and the heart knows when it's meant to melt upon meeting the one.. destined for just us. Your words are filled with profound wisdom and evocative essence.. sigh, it takes so much to move on, but it's the best because our fate has some other plans.. Really adored reading thissss! Sending you poetic warmth, fairy sparkleszzz and mermaid starsz 🧜‍♀️ 🧜‍♀️ 🌹 ❤️‍🔥 🍂 🌙 💫

and you, my dear mesmerizing mermaid, are wise beyond your years. It took many crushes before I determined what love was really all about. It's not about what we are meant to take, but what we are delighted to offer. Thank you for your sage acknowledgement of my lines. Hugs and admiration...🌸✨

A wonderful portrayal of un requited love - I guess its something we can all relate to at some stage of our life and some folk find it so hard to move on when they are rebuffed - plenty more fish in the sea but watch out for tiddlers!! hugs Jan xx

Thanks, my sweet friend. Love can be beautiful, but when it's not returned it's best to acknowledge the refusal and hope the loved one lets you down graciously.

Like the song says Lin, love is a many splendored thing, could that we understand its power, its frailty, its beauty, its sadness, its all-consuming nature, its something we'll never understand only live

It certainly does climb the height of joy and yet, the depth of sorrow. Thanks for your insightful thoughts, Frederic.
