Unprepared

I thought that I was unprepared In case the day got colder. I should have brought a sweater I could toss across my shoulder. I wasn't sure I'd brought enough To read to be fulfilling In case some plans fell through and there Was time that needed killing. I thought I might get hungry And forgot to bring a snack, Though once I'd had that thought, it was Too late for turning back. It turned out I was warm enough, Not hungry and not bored, So luck was on my side, A most mysterious reward. For though the Girl Scouts tell us We should always be prepared, Without such luck we never know Just how we might have fared.

I'm with Nina, a day bag full of this and that. If all was eaten, I'd be so fat. And papers and some other things that maybe I will need. When I get home, I really wonder, why I thought all this I need.

Luck definitely plays an important role when we have failed to take precautions against unforeseen eventualities. But the odds are often (though not always) in our favor, when what we anticipate doing does not expose us to greater than average heat or cold, hunger or boredom. And the genesis of your little lilting poem posted here would certainly have been enough to occupy your thoughts. I enjoyed reading it.
