Unfair Hauntings

Why do you keep
Showing up
In my dreams?

I handed you
Multiple plates
Of confessed feelings

Left them empty
Let me filter through your liver
And carelessly disappear

Into the thick salt fog
Above rows of red brick row houses
Without a second thought

Now here you are
Brushing shoulders
With me in my dreams

The way you
Probably have
With the ghost of my favorite poet

Walking the same
Uneven cobblestone paths
He grew up on

There was
No hesitation
In my step

After one touch
Of you
In that band shirt

That also
Hangs
In my closet

Just
The rapid butterfly
Beating in my chest

Pulling out the chair
Next to you
In the murky lit bar

The smell of alcohol
And the woodsy smell
Of your cologne

Filled my nose
With the exhilaration
That felt criminal

Until it’s stripped away
And the dream suffocates
In Florida heat

Then slowly melts with you
In the cool bed sheets
Of a morning vision

Squeezing
Your hand so tight
On roller coasters

To tangling my finger
In the little curl
Your hair holds

Hoping it’s me
you see
behind your eyes

For I don’t hate you
Haunting
My sleep

I hate you
for not letting me
haunt yours
