Notes About The Poem

Unexpected

Light comes quiet.
The same as yesterday.
A moment to lower your lids, seal the light,
and the image of life shall fade.
There is something in the air
that is deeper than your breath:
Expectations shimmering in the fold.
Each moment separating lives
lived only for conclusions.
We hold to the edge of the wall
with our conversations,
falling into the depth of what is real.
But something in the air is
much deeper than your touch,
tumbling expectations into matter.
We reach our different conclusions
as the moment seeks to separate our lives.
We stand on the edge of all;
walk, run, or fall
into a well of all that is far more real.
Fire, ice, pain, and twice
as much as any fabric worn
we are born into the other side,
immersed in a thickness of longing,
where there is always something that comes
before expectation.
