Under the Surface
The world daily sees our face,
but only the one we choose.
Under its surface lurk many more.
Emotions a plenty hidden away
beneath the one we show to all,
many are the ripples on its surface.
This mask we show to all smiling,
keeping eighty per cent hidden.
True emotions kept locked up.
What is it we fear? Apathy?
Disgust? Betrayal? or Pain?
Yet under the surface we are safe!
Distrust leads to our hidden face.
A fear of not being accepted
if we show what is under the Surface.
Not always has it been this way.
Life's trials have brought it about.
Yet! Nature herself lives on the surface!
