Ukraine's Heroine
"Go tell the Spartans, thou who passest by,
That here, obedient to their laws, we lie."
--Simonides
She has the condolences of a whole nation,
a single mom taking up arms
helping her brothers-in-arms,
shot in the face by sniper fire,
a quick heroic affair.
She was a store clerk and a bread winner,
her son was autist and in special care.
Her mom received the text in Leviv,
didn’t dare to show her relative.
When the war stops I’ll break it to him,
until then what’s the use to bother him?
In this case her judgment was upward bound,
spun the accolade of noble fount.
