Two Pillars

I stare at our phones lying side by side,
A picture of you and me,
Smiling back with glee, and I must agree,
Happier times when our hearts were still intact,
Before the mirror got its first crack.

Going back almost forty years,
Time waits for no one, or so it appears.
Husband and wife at last,
I found the man of my dreams, I broadcast
Side by side, holding hands,
Braving life’s commands.

With Christina, we bridged a life,
Raising a family in spite of the strife,
Never fearing life’s uncertain guarantee.
Working hard every day, consciously,
The rainbow, the pot of gold,
It’s there within your reach to have and to hold.

Standing tall as we brave the storms,
Please write on the dotted line as we sign the form.
A promise of earthly bliss,
Sealed with a kiss.

Day by day, holding tight with all our might,
No matter the fight, we held on tight.
Like two pillars holding up our dreams,
Always working as a team.

Never fearing the end could be near,
For the youngest one, it hit us like a deer.
The crack grew wider; we now speak in whispers.

The pain is harder to share,
Sitting there between us, I do declare.
On the wall is your picture,
As we talk about a tree or bench and adding a scripture.

Going to bed with heavy hearts,
We must carve a new start—
One by honouring your memory,
Two has been our strength all along—it’s no mystery.

We are the two pillars still holding on,
As a team, we will face a new dawn.
We might sway in the breeze as we are older,
But we will stand shoulder to shoulder.

Loss of a child? Brutally devastating. It has ended many a marriage, strengthened others
