Twenty Inches
If you stand
where two Ash tree’s lean together
with your back to the toilet block,
and then mind-walk
across the sun-dappled water
maybe fifteen paces,
you will see where it happened.
Even though there were people
gathered around this ornamental pond,
even though the excited dog
bounced off the concrete bottom
of the shallow water
as it chased a rubber ball –
on that sunny day, no one saw
twenty inches of water
rush into a small child’s mouth.
