Twenty Inches
If you stand
where two Ash tree’s lean together
with your back to the toilet block,
and then walk your mind
across the sun-dappled water
maybe fifteen paces,
you will see where the child drowned.
Even though there were people
gathered all 'round the pond,
even though the excited dog
bounced off the concrete bottom
of the pond
as it chased a rubber ball -
on that day, no one saw
twenty inches of water
quickly rush in.
