Twelve Years Later
Then
Sneakers, candy;
one favourite dress
worn again
and again.
Now
Stilettos, mascara;
Tattered jeans
without the benefit
of skinned knees.
Then
Boisterous laughter,
shrieks of delight.
Running, shouting,
lemonade, glorious sunlight.
Now
Mysterious smile
that seeks attention;
neon lights and beer
but still not as much fun.
Then
Liquid sunshine
like yellow satin;
all my friends,
so many games to play
Now
Hung-over mornings,
interchangeable friends;
mind games
and broken hearts.
Then
Hopes, fantasies;
dreaming, waiting
restlessly
to grow up.
Now
Disappointed.
Nostalgic.
Wishing those carefree days
would come back.
