Treading Water

Treading water
Where did it all go wrong?
What happened
To those dreams and hopes
Of yesteryear?

Traded in for hard currency
They're drifting further and further away
And you can't summon up the strength
To save them from the abyss

Now you're owned by the bank,
Climbing up debt mountain
As responsibilities snap away
At your heels

You used to laugh at the lottery
And all those desperate saps
Now it's your only escape
From 40 years hard labour

Treading water
How long before you start to sink?
But something always keeps you kicking
When it's easier to drown.
