Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson- "transcendentalists". I got Emerson's book "Nature" (guggenheim.org) but it was boring.

The inspiration was a poem by Thoreau ~ Men say they know many things but lo, they've taken wing, the arts and sciences, a thousand appliances, the wind that blows is all anyone knows. [ See transcendentalism ]
