Transition of the She Sky Warrior
For Tolulope Arotile
Men that choose to be warriors do not die
Women who earn warrior badges live forever
And death, though dreadful and inescapable
Cannot wipe names of she-warriors from tablets
Where even brave soldiers feared to trudge
You dared to soar and chose to be a sky-warrior
Because you craved peace for your people
You were not afraid of death
When outlaws arose against the clan
In the Northern plains
You became lightning mingled with thunder to them
You chased the cowards and scoundrels into hovels
That even the king and his men converged
To see you adorn your heroine’s medal
We all shall stare Destiny in the eye
But cruel Fate has made you leave early
Choosing the best among the youngest
You would have wished for a warrior’s death
But the metal horse that darted backwards
With a non-adversary as its rider
Left us with haunted thoughts
As you transited before nightfall
Filling us with grave emptiness
And our hearts with lead
Foes may gloat that you sleep eternally
But you have gone to be with winged generals
You were a warrior-seed planted by Heaven
And with your own hands you wrote your epitaph
In a score and half a decade, you etched your name
As a she sky-warrior in folklore of the kingdom
Death thought you died but you have just been reborn
