Town Children

There they were
as my bus pulled in
each gathering at the bus stop
ready to tease.

A few of us disembarked
a little more slowly than the rest
I, the last to step down
onto the concrete sidewalk.

Barely walking to the corner light
waiting to cross the street
their jeering and their laughter rose
"the country cowboys are here."

There were my friends,
classmates who shared
the wooden body shaped desks
alongside of me.

"Hey Texas cowgirl,
how were the horses today,
go for a morning ride,
feed the ducks and the geese?:

"Just ducky, " I said
hurrying toward our class
where most went to other rooms
and my teacher waited at the door.

With a smile she eyes me
and scowled at the rest
speaking quite loud she said
"Today, Annie gets to sit upfront."

I laughed and chuckled to myself,
on each student's birthday
everyone gets to eat cake
and today was Texas cowgirl's day.
