Today In History June 10

Bridget Bishop – Salem witch
Today on Gallows’ Hill did twitch
The year was 1692
When witches trials were brand new
The first of nineteen to be hung
One reason – an outspoken tongue
And she wore the witch’s big black hat
She ran a tavern on top of that
For Salem Town where she did live
They say she dressed provocative
A bright red bodice over her black dress
They claimed she left me in distress
They say she’d spoken to the dark lord
And late at night played shuffleboard
No one defended her at her trial
Twas no surprise that after while
They hung her there on Gallows’ Hill
They say her spirit haunts there still

All the young men who are gay
Celebrate this glorious day
For into the world this day did come
That great gay icon – Frances Gumm
The year was 1922
She would become an ingénue
With Mickey Rooney at her side
Nineteen films they did survive
As Dorothy in the Land of Oz
She won our hearts and our applause
Now over the rainbow blue birds fly
With Judy Garland bye and bye

Carolyn Devonshire June 11, 2011 at 9:23 AM Was Frances Gumm's Judy Garland's real name, Mike? I don't recall seeing her name in any of the old movies. The Salem witch killings are a sad chapter in American history. Some of these women may have had undiagnosed mental illnesses and others were probably just a bit eccentric. I don't believe any were "witches." Great poem! (I love history.) Love, Carolyn Mike Dailey June 11, 2011 at 10:04 AM Frances Ethyl Gumm was her real name. You can see why she had to change it but I could not find anywhere that explained how she came up with Judy Garland. the Salem witch hunt was a sad time in our history. None of them deserved to die.
