Today I Was Speechless

The child is perpetually angry
Because he is incredibly sad
He is not a delight to his teacher
Enjoys stirring things up
Often keeps his classmates on edge
His teacher can only take so much;
then he comes to me.
I am the school counselor.

I understand he is in pain
But seeing his face daily is a downer
Because he cannot release his sadness
It has been there a long time
Keeping it has been one way
To keep in touch with his birth parents
Who were probably also sad

Today I heard him laugh for the first time
Twice in a row.
I was amazed and excited
I asked him what career he wants
NFL Player
I said what about when you are fifty?
I will be a counselor, he said. You inspire me.
I was speechless.

Very insightful lad, Caren. I love your poems about the kids you work with everyday. I learn so much from them...and you!
