To Touch the Stars

I watch them often on hot summer nights
lying in the grass, legs crossed
wondering how they do what they do.

what are they there for?
not what the school book tells you
what the book in your heart says.

stars, a million miles away
swimming in a sea of black
like nothing else in the world.

watching them gives me inner peace.
I reach up to touch them
and fall back to earth
content to be here.
