TO THE VAMPIRES

I’ve crossed paths with toxic people.
Toxic people, like rain you meet without an umbrella, without warning.
Toxic people with neatly pressed flattery and wrinkled hearts.
People who judge.
People who envy.
People who say hello with biting teeth.

It’s unbelievable,
it’s pathetic,
it’s terrible.

Now, I observe. I choose. I clear out.
Like picking stones out of your shoes before learning to walk without limping.

Sometimes it comes back.
It stings.
It tightens.
It breaks the heart a little.

And the tears do their work:
they fall, they insist, they know better than we do.

And then one day, they stop—
like the rain again—
and we breathe differently.

We understand we were neither the first
nor the last
in their little masquerade.

They perform—
always the same roles,
well-fitted costumes,
victims on display.

And we—
we become the villains
without ever signing the script.

They turn the mirrors around,
show you your reflection like a fault.

“It’s not me,” they say,
“it’s never me.”

They are perfect.
Perfect like a mistake one refuses to correct.

It has a name,
but they don’t hear it;
it slips off them like water on stone.

Gently, without a sound,
we walk away.

And one morning, without warning,
we realize
our shoulders are lighter,
and silence hurts less
than their words.
