To the Son We Never Had
(dedicated to Jeremiah Padya: died on 22 November 2017)
I know not if there is a heaven
Though I do dream of it each night
I know not if it was the plan of God
Or some sick joke of the devil
Though I have not held you in my arms
And never walked with you in the poppy fields
I love you still as if I knew you for infinity
Your departure has stung our hearts
And I still know the angel I saw
Three days in our lives we will never forget
You are our shining light
And as the earth endures
While the sea stretches out to the sky
Lift up your small hands to the sky
Place them in the hands of the great I am
Give him a smile for me
Hold tightly to his cloak
