To the Poet Nguyen Duc Son

By Phan Tan Hai

Once he heard a secret calling,
skipped school and sat on a distant island.
He saw the solitary clouds of the mountain forest—
a thousand years passed as she walked by.

Following the sunlight through whispering pines,
he led her into mountains veiled in mist.
He howled his poems into rain and wind,
sending them toward a wild and distant future.
