Notes About The Poem
Dear Mom,
I missed you so much on Mother’s Day, but I hope you know how happy I am that you were finally out on that cruise. You have worked so hard for so long, and it makes me smile to know you were out there somewhere on the beautiful blue ocean, taking the time for yourself that you truly deserve.
Thank you for loving us through every little bit of chaos, for accepting us exactly as we are, and for being the heart of our family. You mean the world to me.
Love you always, Jamihttps://www.poetrysoup.com/images/bio_images/JamiPatterson187915/photos/ps_mom-5484.jpg
To My Guiding Star at Sea
The miles of ocean, wide and blue,
Keep us apart this special day,
But every wave that carries you
Brings all my love across the spray.
I missed your laugh, your gentle face,
The comfort only you provide,
But knowing you’ve found time and space
To rest, fills me with quiet pride.
You move through life with hands so worn,
From years of work and constant care,
A little scattered, perhaps, when torn
Between the thousand things you bear.
And yes, we fuss, and yes, we sigh,
We trade our complaints back and forth—
But through it all, you never deny
The steady, grounding, unconditional worth.
You see the mess, the flaws, the strain,
And wrap them in a love so deep,
You make us feel whole once again,
With promises you always keep.
Like that yellow rose, with the sunset red
Tipped soft upon its velvet leaf,
You bloom in beauty, just as I said,
A joy that’s sharp, a sweet relief.
So soak in the sun, let the salt air clear,
The worries that you’ve held so long.
I’m celebrating you, even from here,
Within the words of this simple song.
My scatter-brained, hardworking heart,
My blue-sky love, my guiding star,
Though oceans keep us miles apart,
I love you exactly as you are.
