To Group and Believe

TO GROUP AND TO BELIEVE Man is a social animal Yet he divides himself most finely A niche for every aspect of living He creates to make his life worthwhile Religions despite their ultimate common goal abound The soul is controlled as intimately As is the believers’ will It seems we must be members of a group To exist A flock willing or forced to be led Each group is an exclusive sect With its own claims to the rights to eternity That on occasion harbours fanatics The utopia of an all-embracing humanitarian society Easily trampled In order to boost membership No room for the outsider No compassion for the uninitiated Only righteous indignation When you do not belong Praises are lifted high To a god or a man who occasionally hears The multi facets of this mighty being A quagmire that only the zealots can wade through Discrepancies in dogma and creed abound Passionately the leaders defend the idiosyncrasies Of a belief that on occasion Has limited modern appeal Their crusaders challenge all Dissenters within cast out With no brotherly love shown The mind and body shackled to the leaders sense of Right and wrong Room only for soldiers to the cause Who obey unflinchingly How long till the great one above arrives Here on earth Where some would argue he should always be? A chance to see the dogma becoming reality To confirm its authenticity
