To Alice Walker
it was so gentle
the way they flew
around my head
and fluttered on
my shoulders
I didn't know poetry
could travel up and
down arms like
exquisite black
butterflies and
softly saying what
is so true for you
and the world --
unafraid of what
is broken and
just as confident
in what can keep
the world whole
