To a Friend Who is Battling Cancer

I know that it's hard to stay strong.
I know that it's hard to be brave.
I know that you're not interested
in being an inspiration.
I know that it's hard to carry that weight,
knowing there are so many constants.

The appointments...
the testing...
the scans...
the needles...
the uncertainty...
the emotional load...
the grief...
the fear...
the sheer exhaustion...
the never getting a break
from thinking about it...
even on good days.

But I can see you, my friend.
I can see you not giving up
not giving in
not being negative
not being defeated.

Yes, I can see your struggle
with hope...and grief
with joy...and fear
with gratitude...and anger.

It doesn't mean that you are weak.
It means that you are human.

And no one...
NO ONE...
has to be "good" at cancer.
