Time Warp

They say you can’t
Go home again.
But I did.
Not a good decision!
There’s a time warp
Between then and now.
Things shrink in size.
Memories shatter
In the light of now.
Where is the couch I hid
Behind to read
So I didn’t have to
Go out and play?
Where is the tree I
Loved to climb?

The people are gone.
The rooms are empty.
Even the shadows are gone.
No sense of the place
Where I grew up,
The one I remember.
Now my mind wrestles
With the warm
And lovely
Pictures in my mind
And the harsher reality.
And I wish that
I had paid attention
To that old adage
Because it’s true.

I remember when we moved briefly back to my wife's hometown. She was so excited, but it was entirely different. Still no matter where we lived, she always longed to go back there to live. I could never understand it.
