Imagine you were not only a ghost but a time travelling ghost who could experience the sights and noises and smells and everything of a time gone by, like when the Wright brothers were creating flight.
I woke with a horse clip clopping along,
I woke with its shuffling hoof,
On the cobblestone ground beside my doorway,
I woke with the rain on the roof…
What, where and when had I woken up in,
Why were things not like before,
And everyone wearing those olden time hats,
This place I’d need to explore.
So I walked outside to get in my car,
My car that was no longer there,
Instead there were horses, with beautiful carts,
And they were everywhere,
And things smelt alive, like freshly baked bread,
Like a fire for a cake and a roast,
And people walked by me, not seeing me there,
Walked passed me like I was a ghost.
And the sound of the birds, the millions of birds,
In harmony up in the sky,
With the paper headlines splashing the news,
Of the Wright brothers learning to fly
That’s when I saw no me in the mirror,
I realised my new life had begun,
I was a dead walking shadow, walking the streets,
Taken back to nineteen O one.
