Three Chords and the Truth
Biting on words
so hard knuckles crack;
You should have told me;
Warned me every broken verse
would be something shattering, new;
That it would be three chords and the truth;
When my thoughts close like walls
catch me, hold me, don’t let me fall;
Choking on a lump in my throat
tip my chin and say ‘No’;
Turn those eyes and throw me a rope;
Biting on honesty so hard it burns,
the melody as that record turns;
Setting me on fire and I can’t breathe,
all I want is for you to tell me
‘I’m not going anywhere’;
That it’s ok to let this song play through,
That you aren’t going to turn and go
as soon as I turn up the stereo;
Drowning in a rhythm smooth as ice;
I thought I knew, but everything I didn’t
is leaving me longing, dizzy on words;
Dizzy on three chords and the truth.
