Thoughts of Wonder

Until old age imposes itself upon us,
we view ourselves as young of spirit and heart.
And yet, time forces us to move on
past the boundaries of memory;
and confront reality
in its starkness.
Time is neither here nor there,
and yet, it remains a constant.
And weaves itself into all our actions or inactions;
grinding us down
with equal determination,
it leaves only broken versions of what used to be
in its inexorable passing.
The magic of faith and the miracle of birth,
remind us that we are mortal
by design,
for only death can release a soul
created to ascend.
We're born enthusiastic;
splendiferous shooting stars
fueled by promises and possibilities.
And yet, we eventually fizzle out
to an undramatic finish,
oblivious to the trail of sparks left in our wake.
And we strut upon life's stage
with but one desire;
to entertain thoughts of wonder.
