Those Hideous Vines

I received a packet of seeds that read wildflowers, the seeds were a variety of shapes and tones; some big and some quite small, I planted them and watered them and waited. Soon, green sprouts were starting to show, and some were growing very, very fast; it looked like a vine and in no time had hooked, tentacles everywhere and not pretty either. I asked a friend what she thought this plant was, and she said- these are runner beans; I hated them and ripped them out of my garden, but they still come back and I keep ripping them out. They are hideous and ugly and definitely not wildflowers! I can sense the deep emotion of angst throughout your very well written poem, Constance. I love the honest way you expressed your frustration, but never dreamed this could happen with "wildflower" seeds. I spent 23 years trying to de-vine my yard in Tallahassee, but the vines were winning. Congratulations on an awesome first-place win! Hugs, Carolyn

Carolyn, thanks so much for the great contest and my placement. I will be never get a wildflower packet ever again. Once these vines get hold it is almost impossible to get rid of them and they are not even a lovely poetic vine _Constance

They are renegade vines, I bet. And those are the most difficult to get rid of; too bad the packet of seed was totally mislabeled! I have had bad luck with three or four packets of "wild flower seeds" and do not buy them any more. Nice poem.
