This Toughened Heart

If life is just but memories then I have far too many; sorrows I had lost count of and happy endings so few. Yet the pains accumulated through all the hard years only make rare times of joy so much sweeter to savor by this toughened heart. Seasoned by the seasons, fired up by smoldering fires, dismissive of empty threats of more dark clouds to come, this scarred, undaunted soul just laughs, daring 'Bring it on!' In the end I wear a big smile, no shade of tears nor a frown, a conquering hero triumphant over all adversities lying prone under my feet on the ground.
