This Old House

Dust now covers where love once lived,
years of happiness wrapped in laughter.
This old house has seen its share,
of joy and tears from floor to rafter.

Bread was broken while troubles fixed,
prayers were prayed to the Lord above.
My parents' home we all would come,
because all was done there out of love.

Now we load their things because they're gone,
the walls now bare where memories hung.
The house seems lonely without them there,
no neighbors knock, no bells have rung.

As we hand the keys to someone new,
the once dark skies seem some how blue.

Very touching, Wren. It falls to the children to pack things away and dispose of their homes and belongings. I went through this twice - first when my Mom died and later Dad. Instead of selling our family beach home, I decided to live here. Memories stay alive within the walls. Thank you for posting this and congrats on your win in Brian's contest!

I love the melancholy yet loving emotions of your poignant poem, Wren. Such beautiful and moving imagery; 'Bread was broken while troubles fixed,' - so poetically wondrous and such an intimate glimpse of a close and loving family.. your closing couplet speaks so eloquently to your heartache. Your wistful reverie touches my heart deeply.. Warmest wishes always.. ~Susan

Thank you Susan, Your comments are put so beautifully. It seems that all the world's problems could have been solved around that table. At least my little world.

It is a guilty feeling I have when I abandon any home where there has been love and furniture and prayers, and now I know there will not be any of this goodness for awhile. I always feel the sadness of the house which was once home.

My father passed away in May, my mother 4 years almost to the day. We just sold the house. Giving those keys to the new owner felt like we were giving up more than a home. A door I walked through a many a times, no need to any more.
