this diamond ring
~ for mom ~
the dearest thing she’d ever owned
she had just once, found it alone
sized down to fit her shrunken frame
in waning years, though sadness came
but promptly back, ‘pon finger, posed
where Dad had put it … then proposed
and there it shined throughout her life
to bright the way - her king’s dear wife
but ‘fore she parted this dear earth
she made it one more gift of worth
and showed her son the depth of love
that she’d keep sending from above
she took this treasure, gold and grand
and placed it sweetly ‘midst his hand
then wrapped his fingers ‘round it tight
and kissed her boy … his last goodnight …
well …
that ring became my dearest prize
but much too small and thin to size
so bought, I did, one bright gold chain
and on that strand … her ring remains
and it shall stay there, ‘gainst my chest
to show the world her love was best
‘til from this charmed world I depart
Mom’s safe and warm there …
near my heart.
