Thirteen Confuses Me

Her orange ways disturb me Perturb me, confuse me, Make me crazy Her shrouded secrets Concern me, keep me at a distance Shut me down soundly and I am her mother! Her striped attitude worries me I fear what I do not understand. And I do not understand thirteen.

I love your poem for its honesty and clarity. I think you express the fears that many parents share about teens. This may not exactly comfort you but the poet Kalil Gibran wrote: "Your children are not your children They are the sons and daughters of life's longing for itself." The hardest thing we must learn is to love by letting go. Take care and thank you! :-)

Thank you Thomas. I have ten grandchildren, but three daughters, and I still remember those days. Also, other mothers ask me and I say "They have to push you away, so they can work toward becoming mothers themselves."
